HELLO OCTOBER

Pinch, punch and all that… it’s October. How the hell did that happen? Feels like September was only yesterday…

Behind December (ooh Santa/beer!), October is possibly my favourite month of the year for a number of reasons. It’s Edie’s birthday month (woo hoo – bouncy castle!), we get those beautifully crisp days when the sun is low and trees are illuminated with a glow that calls for countless #nofilter photographs, there’s the spook of Halloween and it’s that in-between month when we can reintroduce scarves and our favourite coat back into the mix... dreams.

But the main reason for my fondness towards October is the number of things you can still do outside with your children before the weather rapidly declines…

I’m talking about long walks enhanced by what nature discards – huge brown leaves and countless conkers! Has a child ever looked happier than when surrounded by rotting foliage?! The joy and wonder children experience when filling a basket with conkers is something to behold, but get your skates on, there won’t be many left in a few weeks – seized by other children and/or wildlife or just not up to the standards of the current shiny yield. Further to the leaves and conkers, squeals of wriggly delight can be heard for miles (ok, metres) around in our surrounding woods as creepy crawlies are collected, examined and (begrudgingly) returned. Hungry work all this hoarding and exploration... but fear not! - Look no further than the thorny brambles for the last remaining blackberries desperate to be picked by eager, infant hands.

Such discoveries and foraging are met with amazement by children and what do you know, they’re all completely free!

Edie is definitely the outdoors type – on a weekend morning it doesn’t take long before she’s got her wellies on and is ready to tackle the elements; magnifying glass in one hand, dog leads in the other. The tomboy in her loves nothing more than climbing a tree or making a scrumptious mud pie, so with this fine October weather urging us outside, you better get out there too, or she’ll have your child's share of the conkers…

Happy October!
